Thank you for agreeing to volunteer with AYSO! To formally register and be certified to take the field with the kids, you'll need to follow a few steps.
First thing's first: Formally register as a volunteer.
For
returning coaches, just log in to your account on this page, click on the Volunteer button on the left of the screen, then 'Find Volunteer Roles' on the top right, then select the right coach role in the correct age division. Follow the prompts from there...
For
new coaches, see
this page on AYSO's national site. The process involves submitting an application for a background check with a third party company, Sterling Volunteers, and you will need to
respond to an email that will be sent to you. Note that our region pays for background checks.
With the background check submitted, log back into 'My Account' on our website (top right of the screen) and click on the Volunteer tab (left side of the page). Then expand the 'Important information from AYSO' section at the top of the page to reveal these details:
Next, you'll need to take a few online courses that are accessible via the 'AYSOU' link in your volunteer profile, seen here:
When you click that link, it will take you to our "etrainu" platform. Navigate on the left side of the page to 'Training Library' and click on the link for Safe Haven courses. Complete the online options for each of these three courses:
- Safe Haven
- Concussion Awareness
- Sudden Cardiac Arrest
Save your completion certificates from each course just in case!
Also note:
Returning coaches do not need to re-take these courses if it's been less than 3 years since you took it last.
Next, complete a course called
'Safesport'. For
returning coaches, this course is brand new for 2022. This is a 90 minute course so budget time to complete it. You will need to create a new user profile to set up an account. Be sure to use the
AYSO-specific link to complete the course and ensure that 1.) it is free, and 2.) your completion certificate automatically gets attached back to your volunteer profile in our system.
Lastly, you'll need to complete a
Coaching course that's specific to the age group you'll be coaching. Back in the AYSOU environment, navigate back to Training Library and click on the Coaching tab. For Playground and 5U-10U coaches, complete the
online option for that age group. (Note that 5U coaches should take the 6U course and 7U coaches should take the 8U course.)
For 12U, 14U and 19U coaches, coaching licenses are granted after attending a one-day in-person training session led by an AYSO-certified instructor. Check the 'Training Events' section to see if there are any local options coming up, or work with your division coordinator to schedule time to attend one of those courses.
All told, these courses may take around 4 hours to complete, but they can all be done from the comfort of your couch!
If you run into any issues or have questions along the way, please contact your division coordinator. Thank you!!!
